Grond, the mighty mace of Morgoth that he used in single combat against the Elf-king Fingolfin. Its power was overwhelming (a strike from the Hammer would open a smoking crater in the ground) but it proved too unwieldy a weapon for the battle, and Fingolfin was able to elude its earth-rending blows. (Morgoth did eventually defeat his enemy, but only by crushing him beneath his great black shield.) A later Grond, the great battering-ram used by Sauron's forces against the Great Gate of Minas Tirith, took its name from Morgoth's Hammer of the Underworld.
