The earliest known member of the family that would come to be known as the Gamgees. He lived in the village of Gamwich, more than two centuries before the War of the Ring. Hamfast's son Wiseman moved to Tighfield, where he came to be known as 'Wiseman Gamwich' from his original home, and over the generations this surname evolved into 'Gamgee'.
Hamfast of Gamwich is not to be confused with Sam's father Hamfast Gamgee of Bagshot Row, who lived long afterward, and was in fact the great-great-grandson of the original Hamfast of Gamwich village.
