Golden House

The household of the Kings of the Mark

"There was also Aragorn son of Arathorn, and Legolas the Elf, and Erkenbrand of Westfold, and the lords of the Golden House."
The Two Towers III 8
The Road to Isengard

A rare term apparently referring to Meduseld, the Golden Hall of the Kings of Rohan, and especially to the bodyguard attached to the King who dwelt there. It occurs only once, in the passage quoted above, and so its meaning is not completely clear. This text comes from a reference to the final moments of the Battle of the Hornburg, at the point where the Men of Rohan have finally driven back the invaders, and the reference here to the 'lords of the Golden House' seems to connect to a mention of the King's Company immediately beforehand. This company was an éored known as the King's Riders, a detachment of young Rohirrim, typically of noble birth, who formed the King's personal company and bodyguard.
