Ferumbras Took III

The thirtieth of the Shire-thains

Thains of the Shire

The son of Thain Fortinbras II and Lalia Clayhanger, Ferumbras inherited the Thainship from his father. It was during his time as Shire-thain that Bilbo Baggins' famous Birthday Party was held, and though he is not mentioned in detailed accounts of the Party, we do know that he was present. He died in the year III 3015, just three years before Frodo set out from the Shire. He left no heir, and the succession passed to his distant cousin Paladin.

Notes

1

The name Ferumbras has its origins in French, deriving from Fierebras, probably ultimately from Latin ferox brachium. The name is variously translated as 'ferocious', 'wild' or 'brave' of arm. In the form Ferumbras it became attached to a character in medieval tales of Charlemagne and his knights.
