Ferdibrand Took

The son of Ferdinand Took

Ferdibrand
Took

The son of Ferdinand Took, Ferdibrand was descended from Hildibrand Took, the eighth child of the famous Old Took. A contemporary of the Hobbits who travelled with the Company of the Ring, Ferdibrand was born just one year after Meriadoc Brandybuck. The name Ferdibrand is an adaptation of his father's name Ferdinand that contains elements meaning 'journey' (or possibly 'bold') and 'sword'.

Notes

1

The -brand in Ferdibrand's name is almost certainly 'sword', but there is some doubt over the initial Ferdi- element. It is clearly intended to mirror his father's name Ferdinand, and in that name it might carry the meaning 'journey', 'bold' or possibly 'peace'. Given that the rest of Ferdibrand's name apparently means 'sword', then 'bold' seems the more likely of these various alternative interpretations.
