Everard
Took

The youngest son of Adelard Took, and thus one of the numerous great-great-grandchildren of Gerontius, the Old Took. Everard was therefore a distant cousin of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck, all of whom could also claim descent from the Old Took. Born in the year III 2980, Everard was therefore twenty-one years old at the time of Bilbo's famous Birthday Party. During a lull in Bilbo's Farewell Speech at that party, Everard climbed onto a table with Melilot Brandybuck and began to perform the dance known as the Springle-ring.

Notes

1

The ever- in Everard comes from Old English eofor, meaning 'boar'. Exactly the same name element is seen in Everholt, the name of a wood in Rohan inhabited by a great Boar, and (in its original form) in Eofor, the name of a son of King Brego of Rohan.

2

Many earlier editions of The Lord of the Rings show Everard as having three elder sisters. This number was amended by Tolkien, and later editions correctly show two sisters rather than three (although neither of their names are recorded).
