Huge resinous trees with spreading branches. In the Third Age, as today, cedars were most common in warmer lands, but they were apparently not unknown in the Shire.

Cedars of all kinds grow in the wild in regions rather to the south and east of the known northwestern parts of Middle-earth. We might conjecture that the cedars found growing in Ithilien by Frodo and Sam were probably examples of Cedrus libani, the Lebanon Cedar, based solely on the fact that that tree's geographic range seems to fit most closely with the approximate location of Ithilien.
