A title given to Bard of Lake-town, and later Lord of Dale, who was famed for shooting the Dragon Smaug.

It would be natural to assume that Bard's title of 'the Bowman' came from his feat of shooting of the Dragon Smaug. This would indeed seem to be the case, although he is once described (rather than titled) as a bowman before Smaug's death. So, he might conceivably have been known as 'Bard the Bowman' before he slew the Dragon.
