A title used of Boromir, Captain of the White Tower of Gondor and a mighty warrior who fought to defend the South-kingdom at the end of the Third Age. He was sent northward by his father, Steward Denethor II, to discover the secret of Isildur's Bane, and so became part of the Company of the Ring. He was slain by Orcs at Parth Galen while trying to defend the Hobbits Merry and Pippin. We only have a single record of Boromir being referred to as 'Boromir the Bold', in the funeral song made for him by Aragorn, quoted above. It is not clear, then, whether this was a common epithet for Boromir among the Gondorians, or simply a title created by Aragorn for his elegy. In either case, it fits well with Boromir's fearless character. For acknowledgements and references, see the Disclaimer & Bibliography page. Original content © copyright Mark Fisher 2023.
