Black One

Gollum’s name for the Dark Lord Sauron

A rare term used to describe the Dark Lord Sauron. Our only recorded use of this name is by Gollum, when he angrily denied that he had been sent to seek the Ring by the 'Black One'. In this he was at least speaking the truth as he understood it: he had in fact been released from Mordor to lead the way to the One Ring for its maker, but he mistakenly believed that he had escaped without help, and was seeking to recover the Ring for himself.
