Bergil

Bergil's name is not explained, but it appears to derive in part from his father's name Beregond, which apparently means 'valiant stone'. From that source comes Ber(e)-, 'valiant', while the ending -gil can usually be taken to mean 'star'.

The Lord of the Rings gives no hint that Bergil might have had a brother, but a younger son of Beregond is mentioned elsewhere. This is Borlas of Pen-arduin, who appears in The New Shadow, the quickly-abandoned sequel to The Lord of the Rings. The New Shadow is set more than a century after the defeat of Sauron, and Borlas appears there as an old man, but he is said to have been one of the few still living to remember the War of the Ring. It seems, therefore, that though Bergil never mentions his brother, Borlas does seem to have been alive, and quite possibly living in Minas Tirith, during the final years of the Third Age.
