When Sauron planned to ensnare the Elves in the Second Age, he took on a pleasant form and went to them in disguise, offering them the hidden knowledge that would lead to the Rings of Power. The most famous of his aliases in this period is Annatar, 'Lord of Gifts', but other names are also recorded. Among these was Artano, a name meaning 'high smith' that referred to the skills in crafting and making he had no doubt learned from his original master, Aulë the Vala.
