Artanis

The ‘father-name’ of Galadriel

It was the custom of the Elves that a child's father should give a name to his newborn son or daughter, and so when Finarfin's youngest child was born, his only daughter, he chose the name Artanis, meaning 'noble woman'. As an adult, Artanis took a different name, a name in the Sindarin tongue meaning 'radiant garland' - Galadriel.
