Tear-maiden

Niënor’s name in Brethil

After Glaurung stole Niënor's memories, she ran from her escort and was lost in the wild. In a thunder-storm, she wandered into the Forest of Brethil, where she was discovered by her brother Túrin. Neither of these knew the other, as Niënor had been born after Túrin had left his homeland, and Niënor could not remember her own name. So, Túrin devised a new name for her: because she wept on their first meeting, he called her Níniel, which means 'Tear-maiden'.
