The Gilrain was the longer of the two rivers, with at least one tributary of its own, so it might be expected that the Serni was its tributary, rather the other way around. However, it's explicitly recorded that the short length of river between the rivers' confluence and the sea was known as the 'Serni', not the 'Gilrain'.

This river took its name from its mouth, which was blocked by a bank of shingles or small pebbles. Serni derives from sern, the Sindarin word for a small stone or pebble.
