A name used by Gandalf to describe the One Ring, the great Ring of Power created by the Enemy - Sauron - through which to exert his will over the inhabitants of Middle-earth. His Ring was lost when he was defeated in the War of the Last Alliance, and taken by Isildur it found its way into Anduin, where it lay for nearly two and half thousand years. At last it was discovered by Déagol, but it was taken from him by Sméagol (better known as Gollum) and long afterwards the Ring came into the possession of Bilbo Baggins. It was Bilbo's adopted heir Frodo who took the Ring back to the place of its making, Mount Doom in Mordor, where it was finally destroyed.
