The sixteenth Ruling Steward of Gondor, who inherited the Stewardship from his father Belecthor I. Orodreth shared his name with an illustrious Elf-lord of the First Age, Orodreth the younger brother of Finrod Felagund and late ruler of Nargothrond. Orodreth the Steward has left less of a mark on history, and indeed other than his dates we have no records of his rule. He was succeeded by his son, who ruled as Ecthelion I.
Notes
1
The date of Orodreth's birth appears only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. It cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.
2
Steward Orodreth was doubtless named for the famous Elf-lord Orodreth of the First Age, who ruled in Nargothrond after the loss of his brother Finrod. The detailed etymology of the name is unclear, but it is known to contain the word orod, 'mountain'.
3
Orodreth's sister Morwen is only named in volume XII of The History of Middle-earth. According to that source, when Orodreth's son Ecthelion died without issue, it was Morwen's descendants, and specifically her grandson Egalmoth, who continued the line of the Stewards.
