The One

The lone White Rider against the Nine

"The Dark Lord has Nine. But we have One, mightier than they: the White Rider."
Words of Aragorn
from The Two Towers III 5
The White Rider

After Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli encountered the newly-returned Gandalf - now Gandalf the White - they pledged to follow him to Edoras and beyond. In doing so, Aragorn referred to him as the White Rider, or One Rider to oppose the Nine Riders of the Enemy. Note that 'One' in this context, used as a passing reference to Gandalf, is wholly distinct from the title of 'the One' given to Eru Ilúvatar. For that usage, see the alternative entry for the One.
