King of the Mark of the Riders

The Lord of the Rohirrim

When Steward Cirion granted the old Gondorian province of Calenardhon to the Riders of Eorl, the land did not immediately acquire its famous name Rohan. To the Northmen following Eorl it was simply the 'Mark', the land on the borders of the Gondor. After the Oath of Cirion and Eorl, in which the two leaders swore unending friendship between their two peoples, Eorl took the title of 'King of the Mark of the Riders'. He thus established a line of Kings that would last from his own time through eighteen generations to the time of the War of the Ring, and beyond into the Fourth Age.

For a genealogical chart and table showing all the Kings of the Mark of the Riders, see the entry for King of Rohan.
