Hidden Land

A name used in Gondor for Lórien, the land of the Elves ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn. From Gondor it lay far to the north up the Great River, and its secrets were mysterious to the Gondorians, but nonetheless legends and stories were told among them about the strange and enchanted place. It was known at least that Galadriel ruled there, and that it existed somehow beyond the mortal world (this was due to the power of Galadriel's Ring, though that could not have been known to the Men of Gondor).

Long before the rule of Galadriel began, Lórien would have been far less mysterious to the Dúnedain, and indeed its King fought as an ally of Elendil and his sons in the War of the Last Alliance. At the time of the War of the Ring, these events were more than three thousand years in the past, and it's unclear how much of the ancient lore was preserved from that time. It is perhaps notable that Faramir knew the name Laurelindórenan, an old name for the country of Lórien.
