Girithron

A month from the calendars of Men

Months of the year

The Sindarin name for the cold twelfth month of the year, following Hithui and preceding Mettarë, the last day of the year. On a modern calendar, Girithron ran between 21 November and 20 December. The name Girithron was used in the calendars of the Dúnedain, while the Quenya equivalent was Ringarë the 'cold' month. Girithron is only an oblique translation of the Quenya name; it incorporates the word girith, meaning 'shivering'.

Notes

1

To be absolutely literal, the name Girithron meant the month of 'shivering' or 'shuddering'. Compare the name with Nen Girith, the 'Shuddering Water' on the borders of Brethil, which contains the same root word.
