It was the Huntsman of the Valar, called Oromë in Quenya, who had found the newly awakened Elves by the shores of Cuiviénen in the east of Middle-earth. For the Sindar, who never travelled to Valinor in the West, he was thus the only one of the Valar with whom they were directly familiar, and one of very few to acquire a unique name in Sindarin. The direct translation of Oromë into the Grey-elven tongue was Araw, a name that was indeed occasionally used. The more common form of his name among the Grey-elves, though, came from his title Aran Tauron, 'King Forester' or 'Lord of Forests', which in common use became worn down simply to Tauron, meaning 'the Forester'.
