A flowering plant common to pastures and fields, clover is noted for its abundant sweet nectar, which makes it especially attractive to bees. In the Vales of Anduin, Beorn cultivated clover for just this purpose, creating pastures of the flower for his gigantic bees. In Beorn's pastures, varieties of clover grew side by side with 'sweet clover', which despite its name is actually a different but closely related plant. Sweet clover is sometimes called 'melilot', from which Merry Brandybuck's cousin Melilot took her name, showing that clover was known at least as far west as Buckland and the Shire.
