According to Greek mythology, the first anemones sprang from the ground when Aphrodite wept for the loss of Adonis. This story does not, however, offer any obvious reason for naming the flower 'wind-daughter', and the connection remains somewhat mysterious. Some sources suggest that the name may have had its origins in the idea that anemones would only flower when the wind was blowing.
