Notes29 Canis Majoris is a contact binary, a system in which two stars orbit so closely together that they exchange material with one another. The primary star of the system is an O-type supergiant at least ten times the Sun's diameter. Its companion appears to be another supergiant, rather less luminous than the primary, but nonetheless thousands of times brighter than the Sun. Eclipses of the two component stars cause a variation in the brightness of 29 Canis Majoris over a period of four days and nine hours.
