Proper Name | Aitne | Designation | Jupiter XXXI | Primary Planet | Jupiter | Family / Class | Carme Group | Orbital Period | 1 year, 364 days (retrograde) | Distance from Jupiter | Semi-Major Axis: 23,064,400 km (0.15 AU) Periapsis: 16,675,600 km (0.11 AU) Apoapsis: 29,453,200 km (0.20 AU) | Eccentricity | 0.277 | Rotation Period | Not known | Mean Diameter | 3 km 1.8 miles | Notes | Aitne is a member of the Carme Group, a collection of approximately thirty Jovian moons that follow highly inclined retrograde orbits near the outer edge of the Jupiter system. These moons seem to be remains of a body that broke apart as it was pulled into Jupiter's orbit. The 47-kilometre moon Carme represents the surviving bulk of this body, with tiny moons like Aitne, Kale or Pasithee representing fragments that broke away during the capture event. |
