NotesThe distance to NGC 3198 is known with unusual precision, because it was part of a small subset of galaxies examined in great detail by the Hubble Space Telescope for just this purpose. Multiple Cepheid variables within the galaxy were examined in detail (Cepheid variables provide a 'standard candle' for assessing distance), revealing that NGC 3198 lies 14.5 megaparsecs (or a little over 47 million light years) from the Milky Way.
