NotesOne of numerous comets discovered or co-discovered by William Robert Brooks, Comet Brooks 2 was first identified in 1889. At the time its discovery, its nucleus was observed to break into several shards, thought to be the result of an extremely close encounter with the planet Jupiter. This situation has not recurred, and the diminished comet continues to orbit through the inner parts of the Solar System over a period of a little over six years.
