Notes	An ancient and immense globular cluster spanning some 165 light years from side to side, M5 lies far outside the plane of the Galaxy among its halo of surrounding clusters. In the skies of Earth it lies beyond the star 5 Serpentis, and under ideal conditions is visible to the naked eye.

One of more than one hundred and fifty globular clusters that swarm around the Milky Way, M5 lies far outside the main spiral plane of the Galaxy.
