Collinder 173 is an extensive cluster encompassing a region of sky more than six degrees in diameter. It lies almost exactly on the border between Puppis (to the west) and Vela (to the east), and extends into both constellations (if the constellation border were to be visible here, it would run almost directly down centre of the image from north to south). The brightest star visible here (southeastward of the central reticle) is Suhail al Muhlif or Gamma2 Velorum. Imagery provided by Aladin sky atlas
