Unusually for an open cluster, C1 lies far outside the disc of the Galaxy, and being remote from the gravitational influence of other objects has allowed it to remain intact as a cluster for far longer than would normally be the case. C1 has survived as a group for nearly seven billion years, a remarkable age for a cluster of this kind.
