The nebulosity surrrounding Atik, and visible here especially to the south, represents the star-forming region designated IC 348, and contains a cluster of newly-formed stars. Both Atik and IC 348 lie at similar distances from the Sun, estimated in each case at a little over a thousand light years. Atik is not formally considered part of the IC 348 structure, but the two are thought to be related, and both are likely members of the stellar grouping known as the Perseus OB2 Association.
