One of the many children of Gerontius, the Old Took, Hildibrand was the eighth of Gerontius' children. He represented a continuation of the Took tradition of using names with military connections: his given name Hildibrand means 'sword of war'. Hildibrand founded his own branch of the Took family through his son Sigismond, but his most famous descendant was not a Took at all, but a Bolger. This was Fredegar 'Fatty' Bolger, who was the son of Hildibrand's granddaughter Rosamunda.
